I have mentioned here previously that the boys in my house ask about dessert every night. And this time of year they ask about hot chocolate. The temperature outside has gone up and down this past week and this morning it was down near the 30’s.
I called home as usual at 5:00 p.m. as I was getting ready to leave work and talked to Hubs:
Me: I am getting ready to come home.
Hubs: Were you going to stop by the grocery store?
Me: Yes.
Hubs: Can you get orange juice?
Me: Sure
Hubs: Oh, and the boys are asking for Nestle’s Quik to make hot chocolate.
Me: Oh yeah, definitely, they have asked all week for me to get some.
Then I drove to the store wondering why Hubs doesn’t go because he gets off of work earlier than I do. But it is OK because at the store I walked by the meat department and saw many items marked down big time so I stocked up and all the cleaning items we needed that I forgot at Target a few days ago were on sale so I got those too. I even happened to see packets of many-colored buttons for a winter craft for Youngest's winter school party. We're masters of multi-tasking aren't we......
Anyway, back in the car I called home to say I was almost there and to make a request:
Youngest: Hello?
Me: Hi Oldest!
Youngest: No, it’s me.
Me: No way--you sounded so old! Anyway, I am almost home so can you tell Dad to put the Tyson chicken fillets into the oven and start to boil water for the mac n’ cheese.
Youngest: OK. But wait—Mommy—did you get the ‘Quik?
Me: Yes I did.
Youngest: YESsssssssssss!!
I park in the garage and Youngest comes out to help with groceries from my trunk, wanting to carry in the bag that has the Nesquik. Middle was there too help with the groceries. Oldest then comes into the kitchen and asks if I bought the ‘Quik.
I think you get the picture. I’m just glad that it doesn’t take a lot to make these guys happy around here. Oh, and I made everyone leave the kitchen and digest for an hour before I make the hot chocolate. But now it’s time. Who likes marshmallows in theirs?
(How do you make your hot chocolate because I am totally open for any new recipes on this. I heat up milk in a saucepan and pour into mugs that have Quik in them and stir. Youngest puts marshmallows on top).

I love the way your family interacts! I hope our kids stay that sweet.:) As for hot choc, the more marshmallows the better! I have been known to add round 2 of them after the first batch melts. Yum!
I have been making hot chocolate for my two school kids every day for the last 3 weeks after school. It's the only thing they ask for (or, nag me to death for!) We go the Swiss Miss route - nuke a mug of water for 1.5 minutes & stir. Evie likes to drink hers with a straw, but she's a strange bird :)
I think your recipe sounds just about as good as anything. Occasionally I make hot chocolate from the cocoa and sugar and milk and vanilla but really- would kids appreciate that? It IS fun to buy Reddi Whip and let them squirt the stuff into the cup.
Damn. Now I want some hot chocolate.
There really is nothing quite like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold day ... the cup warms the hands and the chocolate warms the spirits!
I agree with Amy, they all sound sweet! I'd give those boys hot cocoa every night.
And I make it exactly the way you make it. We had a tin of fancy cocoa powder once, but it wasn't any better than the Nestle's.
I'm so glad that Jude will finally drink hot chocolate. For a long time he seemed to be intimidated by the...heat of it. But now he's figure out that it's not just a beverage, but dessert as well. And you can't beat that.
Mmmm. I love hot chocolate. My favorite is the Land O' Lakes. Even my two year old asks for hot chocolate, but he gets the Swiss Miss that has no sugar added.
wow...i am lame...there is not warm milk...only boiling water & swiss miss mixed in...and if we have marshmallows, then we throw them in.
not so creative!
but then again...my guys like to have tea and honey...as strange as that is!
and well me...COFFEE!
So sweet. You know what tastes really good - get unsweetened cocoa powerder and add your own sugar and warm in milk. A dash of brandy also nice.
Oh we loooooove hot chocolate!!!
WE drink almost everyday in the winter!! Nothing beats a snowy night with warm cups of cocoa steaming in the air!!
Have you ever heard of Steven's hot chocolate?? That is the gourmet choice around here....It is so divine! It has heavenly flavors like hazlenut, mint truffle, creamy milk chocolate, raspberry chocolate...mmmmm! Kids love it! (It is sold in all local grocery stores....)
Now I think I am off to make me some before my run! love it......
Left you something on the blog today, stop by when you have time :)
Mmm...we pour packets of hot chocolate *without marshmellows* into mugs, fill them with milk, then heat them in the microwave. Then we add a small spoonful of sugar, and I add small marshmellows to mine. YUM.
Your kids are so cute!
WHAT??? Someone actually helped you carry the groceries in??? UNHEARD OF!!!
I always like a shot of Bailey's in my hot chocolate but for the younger set and on days I'm at work, I've found a shot of eggnog will give it a very similar flavor. Yummy!
We do the heat up milk routine and stir in the Hersheys Syrup.Pre-recession I enjoyed the William-sonoma chocolate shavings whisked into hot milk.
Can't do the powdered stuff with water.
Hot chocolate is much in demand around my house too. If you want to be really healthy, add cocoa powder to milk and then sweeten with Stevia. They'll never know the difference.
Milk in the saucepan, some milk chocolate mix (Galaxy from England because we're spoiled), and marshmallow fluff spooned in. Don't know why I love the fluff vs. the individual marshmallows. Oh, wait, were you asking about what to give the kids?
I make up a big batch of homemade mix, mostly because it's cheaper! It's just cocoa, sugar and dry milk. Then I keep it in a canister and they make it all the time.
Yummy hot chocolate and kids helping together. I must say you are a lucky family.

Ah, what a good mom. I can just hear the boys pleased with your purchase of Nestle's Quik. Much better mom than me. I buy the instant in an envelope. Mix it with hot water.
Thinking it is busy around your place right now. Enjoy! (Meant that in a good way.)
