Pants on the ground
Lookin’ like a fool with your pants on the ground
With the gold in your mouth, hat turned sideways
Pants hit the ground, call yourself a cool cat
Lookin’ like a fool, walkin’ to the town
With your pants on the ground!
From an article in the Atlanta newspaper Mr Platt says "he was inspired to create the song three years ago when he saw a guy walking down a downtown Atlanta street with a baby in his arm and his pants slipping below his hips. “He had his underwear showing,” Platt recalled. The song came to him spontaneously. He started chanting the chorus to “Pants on the Ground.” “He was being disrespectful so I wanted to embarrass him,” Platt said. “He rolled his eyes and pulled his pants up a little bit.” Platt has since done that to others as well.
(The article continues:) Platt was very active in the Civil Rights Movement as a teen in Georgia, and was recognized by the state legislature in 2001, having proclaimed September 4th, 2001 "Larry Platt Day." On that special day, the Georgia General Assembly declared that "For the past 40 years, Larry Platt has given of himself in service to the people of the City of Atlanta, the State of Georgia, and the nation...Larry Platt merits the highest recognition for his many valuable contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and his dedication to the struggle for equality and human rights." Mr. Platt, who is also very vocal and active in local Atlanta politics, is regarded by many as a community hero.
His audition on American Idol last week has had over a million views in a few days. He was on The View today. Too bad at age 62 Mr. Platt is over the age limit for going to Hollywood for Idol, but I hear he already has record deals sent his way. I hope he does well and sees dreams come true.

This pants and hat thing has always been a pet peeve of mine, so I loved this song the minute I heard it! The message is so much stronger coming from someone of the same race, though I've seen an equal number of white boys doing it. I don't think the message will ever get thru. But he is awesome, and it's nice that he's gotten this recogition.
Wow, that is really interesting! I don't usually watch Idol, but somehow Laura came home from school singing that song. I was like, what in the sam hill??
Ok I guess I need to find that song on You Tube so I know what the heck everyone is talking about :) It's everywhere I turn!
Jen, it's on the link I provided toward the bottom. Just watched it again before dinner. Big mistake. (we're all signing it again!)
That's a heck of a catchy tune. And one I'll be proud to sing!
Wait, did they tell this story when he was on American Idol? Did I just miss it? That's so interesting.
And I have to admit, that I keep singing that silly song! It't totally stuck in my head.
"Pants on the ground...pants on the ground..."
Oh, sorry.
I have never in my life have heard such a song.I mean, i don't watch American Idol so, I wouldn't know. Now since I heard that song me amd my daughter always sing that song everywhere we go.
I don't watch AI on a regular basis so I didn't see this guy when he auditioned but I've sure hear about him. Think I'm going to have to find him on YouTube and see what everyone is talking about.
Great info, thanks for the article.
That was an awesome background to that story! I saw the audition, heard that the song is now everywhere but had no idea about Larry Platt! Thank you for that info!
I liked him on the show, but now I like him even more.
Happy Friday!

Bill Cosby needs to take that fellow under his wing. This plumber-pants-phenomenon is out of control!
Hi! I'm visiting via Midlife Jobhunter. She listed your blog as one that she reads.
My daughter heard someone at school singing that and came home singing it and explaining it to me.
Thanks for enlightening me further. :)
If it makes boys, young men, and old ones too, stop wearing those pants that are almost falling off, then it's a good thing!
p.s If you have a sweet tooth, come by to see me.
I have to watch this video. I think the whole boxer exposure pants on the ground fashion is So Weird!!
I was wondering what all those Facebook statuses were about.
But seriously, can anyone explain that pants around your thighs thing? That irritates the heck out of me.
I wanted to come back and say "Thanks" for turning us onto this. We watched it at dinner on my husband's laptop -- yeah, at dinner -- and howled.
