We took down our outdoor Christmas lights on Saturday knowing that the arctic cool, windy weather was moving in. This morning for back to school it was a chilly 24 degrees. Sunday meant I had to shop for the school lunch items that we really didn't need these past 17 days.
My middle son has lots of time in the morning (which is just his style) and he makes his own lunch. He told me he started a trend this fall with everyone eyeballing his lunches and now everyone he eats with brings a plastic bag like he does to toss. I don't feel too bad about the using of plastic store bags because he makes his own lunch. There is no way anyone in our house over the age of elementary school will transport anything other than a plastic bag.
Look what he put in his lunch:
Perfect for pretzel dipping.
There was lots of sleeping in during winter break--and the oldest of course takes the cake. He says his world record is close to 2:00 p.m. but that didn't happen here as far as I can remember. I get pretty jittery when it gets to be after 11:00. I know some other moms that are more chill on this knowing how early they have to get up for school right when their REM sleep is happening. But for 17 days I heard about three chapters that had to be read and when I suggest spacing it out and reading a few pages a day I am looked at like I have two heads and 22 snakes growing out of them. So yesterday Hubs was out (teachers had to return to work on 1/2/12) and I turned up the TV loud at about 10:30 (out of kindness!), knowing the next day's alarm would get him up at 5:50 a.m. He got up at 11:00 and then an hour later I couldn't find him and then found him sleeping in the guest room. I promise you the three chapters did not get read.
Today he was out the door at 6:25 a.m., as usual, for the 6:30 a.m. high school bus. He gets home at 2:45 and then watches sports highlights and eats and then at about 4:00 he went into his room. At about 6:00 p.m. I found this:
I had my middle son take this photo. He is the family videographer, as about 15 minutes earlier I asked him to film Dad, who was snoring on the couch. He always denies it so now it is documented. Middle son is savoring this last year that he gets to have lots of time in the morning and leave the house at 8:40 for his bus.
Happy New Year to everyone.

Our schools had a really long Holiday break too. The longest ever. I couldn't believe it when Ryan told me they wouldn't be going back till Wednesday.
And sleeping in happened every day till 11 and then on to 1...I would have thought he would be hungry but I guess sleep one over hunger.
Now the house is so quiet and my day is to get it back into some order. Cleaning! Hubby turned off the outside Xmas lights which made me sad...I like them! I would be one of those folks who would keep them on all year.
Where's the happy medium? Our boys are up by 6:30 on non-school days, although they're well-trained enough to know not to come out of their rooms until 7, when they come into our room and ask permission to watch TV for a bit. I'm assuming this massive sleep shifting will happen in the next couple of years?
And, yes, it's true -- they haven't yet figured out that they can turn on the TV or computer without asking first. I am not complaining!
I am terribly impressed by that lunch. I mean, it actually looks...nutritious. Wow. I need to start filming Jimmy napping - he never believes that he snores!
i love that last photo...cracks me up! and that is one hell of an early morning...yikes! well not the vacation morning...but the school mornings...i don't even get up until 7a.m.! ha!
it is nice to be back in routine...teachers went back last monday and the kiddo's all started back on tuesday...it is all good!
happy new year!!!
Ah, yes. I'd laugh but I'm the same way. Late sleeper and hate, hate, hate when I have to go back to getting up early. Never has my body adjusted to that - no matter how many days, or years, in a row I get up early. I've yet to get back in the classroom this year. Wednesday is my day of reckoning. I think I feel a nap coming on.
