After the game my son asked us, “Did you see the triple and double that I hit? Did you see me throw out that guy at third base?” Yes, we told him we did, it was great, and we also saw his throw to second and more. Later we talked about his team, his coaches, the other team, the personalized jerseys that I am handling as team mom, and opening day on Saturday.
It was a night where we did not talk about studying for his Spanish test, the scientific theories of evolution, debating as to why he has to get online to play with the PS3, why he can’t have 3 friends spend the night this Saturday, and how it sucks that he has a (very tiny) pimple on his face, and why he shouldn’t wear shorts when it is 38 degrees outside.
I’ve realized lately that my oldest son prefers to share some details of his life with only my husband. Such as asking him if he could borrow his cell phone to talk privately in his room to a girl. Or if he can go to the movies with a girl and can Dad drive them (I would have said no. I guess the outing didn’t go well as it only happened once).
When our boys were born I said I could not possibly image myself at sports games cheering and participating. I’ve been pretty quiet at soccer games and roller hockey games and let’s not even mention the football games he’s been on in the fall (true confessions my alma mater is the national championship team but I just don’t understand the game still after all these years).
But I love watching baseball with my sports fanatic son and his new team each year, and the special camaraderie it brings to us.

Very sweet. I feel like I went on a junior high movie date only yesterday, not decades ago. I try not to think about the fact Mr. M's movie date moments are just around the corner. Time goes by way too fast these days.
Yes so true! All my kids are involved in sports and we all love it..great fam time! Your son sounds so talented..!
Fun! And it's true how your kids being in sports can turn you into an enthusiast. We have a lot of fun ahead of us!
Okay, so I'm considering printing out your blogs and using them in my high school classroom as writing prompts to show students how to tell a story. You have everything a story needs in every one of your posts. The rising action, the climax, the falling action, the denouement. Characters get defined, conflicts get resolved, setting is beautifully described. You have it all. Do you think it's all those great English teachers we had at private school, or all those books we have read as young and middle-aged women, or all the blogs we've been reading lately? Or is it just a warm place inside of us that sees life as a series of stories, each with its own beginning, middle, and end, that spills out onto the page without us caring what people think of it, but changing people's lives, one story at a time? I think so. I have always loved listening to you spin a tale, but now I am loving reading them, one story at a time.
hated football til Jack started playing.
gotta love our boys.
This freaks me out because it just makes me face that one day my son will be asking to borrow a cell phone to talk to a girl!!!!!!
Waah.
Baseball is my favorite to watch too...everyone thinks I'm crazy because the games are long and they say "boring", but I love the summer nights, the snack shop for the little ones, and that you can "miss" something and not miss the whole game...if that makes sense.
