Grand Canyon Birthday

I'm lucky that I have a June birthday because many times I am out of town and because I am not in the home setting it is easier to keep busy and not think about getting older, etc.

We camped out at a campgraound on the North Rim side of the Grand Canyon so I got to wake up near one of the seven wonders of the world for my birthday.  It is true how they say you will never forget your first glimpse of the Grand Canyon.  The boys and Hubs had camped on the North Rim almost two weeks prior to when I did with them.  They said it was so uncrowded that they thought it was the best way to experience the Grand Canyon.  Another good thing is that Hubs admitted they took all the scary photos (sitting on ledges) that I would not approve of, on their initial visit.

The boys were really tickled to see my reaction.  On my first day out west after I joined them in Las Vegas, we visited Hoover Dam and before you get to the dam you can stop and visit the new bridge that was just completed this past October.  It was so high and I'm not sure what happens to some women getting older about heights but that is how I am....anyway I kept telling them to not get too close to the railing and I was the same way when we walked the top of Hoover Dam and they told me, "You won't believe the Grand Canyon if you are freaking out now with a railing and everything!"

So, the evening before my birthday, once again Hubs and I got to enjoy a quiet moment while they were in the tent and we watched the moon rise.  I was in a daze and then proceeded to trip badly over a string from the staked tent.  I survived.  The Grand Canyon is incredible and like they say, it doesn't seem real--more like a backdrop.

Birthday night and dinner were spent in Gallup, NM.  We went to a restaurant where the locals go and the whole place sang Happy Birthday to Michele.  The guys had bought turquoise jewelry for me from a Navaho seller at Monument Valley.  I envied that they went there before my arrival and I am so touched that I have a momento.  Hubs told me he practically used our Youngest with his discussion of a "birthday gift for Mommy" in front of the seller--Hubs thinks it helped get him a good deal.

So we're working our way home by a few more days and some hard realities will be on the agenda so I am soaking it up now.

Hope you are enjoying your days of June.

Happy birthday, beautiful lady! You look perfectly young to me -- and certainly are eons younger than that beautiful Grand Canyon. Safe travels to you and your family --

Happy Birthday. Gallup, NM - so sorry. It gets better - and then you hit West Texas. East Texas not so bad.

Can't wait to see all the photos. Yes, the Grand Canyon. Such an incredible sight on first view. And beyond. But that first one.

Well wishes for a safe ride home.

That sounds like an awesome birthday!

And I am the same way about heights when I am with my kids. Alone, I am a very little better.

But, I LOVE the grand canyon. And it is time to take my boys there.

You are so right about the Grand Canyon. You think you know what to expect...but it's just above and beyond. Stunning! So fun to experience that with your hubby and boys. And this is late, but happy birthday!! All the best, dear.

Oh no! I missed saying Happy Birthday! Well, "Happy Birthday" anyway, in a belated kind of way. My family used to do that Grand Canyon trip all the time when I was little. I miss it!
