Boys in Cars

I went to take my 15 year old son to a friend's house the other day and of course he wanted to drive the car this is what he looked like waiting when I got to my car:

Ha-ha!  That was him when he was two years old and he sat in my passenger seat one day and posed for me--I remember it exactly.

Fast forward thirteen more years and this is what he looks like behind the wheel.

I have realized that just as I am not a good passenger in an airplane I am not a good passenger in the car.  What if I have to grab the wheel?

Here is what we need to do so I can take some baby steps.  Hubs took our son first off to a large parking lot on a few occasions before they ever hit the road.  My son looked shocked and amazed when I suggested that I take him to the parking lot, because he feels he has already done the parking lot scenario -- but it wasn't with me.  I need training there!

Last night Hubs took our son and 3 of his friends to play 9 holes of golf (he dropped them off).  But he let our son drive and the other 3 boys did not say a word nor did our son.  Guess they were all busy concentrating (our son is the last of his peers to get a learner's permit with a June birthday).  Never in a million years am I ready to have him drive with 3 other kids in the car and on a busy street.  We really need to hit that parking lot tomorrow.

You know that those of us who've been thru this are chuckling as we read this, right? You'll need to channel your inner teenager and remember back to when YOU learned how to drive! (And the photo reminds me of that car commercial where the dad is sending his daughter off in the car and he sees the little girl she used to be behind the wheel. Touches my heart every time ...)

I have a feeling I will be the one to teach my children to drive. My husband is just too nervous and impatient for it.

Hopefully I will be able to handle it! I was a terrible driver as a teen - I didn't even get my license until I was 18!

Good luck - can't wait to read the post when he gets his license. It will be a huge milestone for you both.

Oh, look at him. Oscar said to me today, "I can't wait to be bigger so I can drive a car!" OMG! He's only four!

I am going through this right now too. The roads kill me.

Oh that two year-old is so precious! I know the big boy is no less precious though. But I can well believe you need training in the parking lot. Where does the time go?

Glad to hear you're feeling up about your job sitch. We need to catch up! We just got back in town last night and here school is staring us in the face. Yikes.
