The Full Buck Moon

Take some time to gaze at the full moon on Tuesday night—the full moon on July 7th is called the Full Buck Moon because it is the month when the buck deers start to grow their (fuzzy) antlers.

The boys are growing fast around here. There’s a wall in the garage where I measure the boys whenever I think of it. I measured them recently and each grew half an inch in 30 days. They are not tall boys (at least not the oldest who is very grateful that he consistently continues to be about a quarter of an inch taller than his brother who is 20 months younger). So at this time I still feel like I am mom to young boys because none of them are close to my height yet (I am 5’6”).

My oldest has a friend who also recently turned 13 and he has grown 3 inches recently and he is almost my height. The two of them just ran the Peachtree Road Race (the largest 10k in the U.S.) together on July 4th. So for the first time in ages we all got up really early and watched this event. Those young bucks practiced only one time and they were able to finish the race with no problem. I ran it the year I was 30. I should have made it a decade celebration and ran it again at age 40. But I had three young bucks then. Maybe I will run it with all of them one year.

OK, I have just announced to the boys that we should all run it together--you have to be 10 years old so we have a couple more years for the youngest. That gives me some notice to get started.

P.S. The mom of the boy who just reached 5'6" told us that where she began measuring him on the wall, she has run out of room because there is a built-in shelf there above his head now. I told her that we moved houses a few years ago and I had kept the measurement on a wall. I traced it and now who knows where I have kept that paper. Mu hubs stated that parents of young ones should nail in a piece of molding vertically on a wall for measuring the kids, and then if you move, just pull the nails out of the molding and take it with you and re-install at new home (where was this idea about 10 years ago?)

(Here are the boys in the Badlands, SD after getting up too early and still half asleep).

Oh, what fun. I have measured my three boys through the years. I had a paper measure of a giraffe I found at a teacher store. I was able to move it to the next house we lived in. Such fun to mark, especially these last few years as they strive to be the tallest - middle son is done at 6'3.5", oldest son done at 5'11 1/4", and the youngest has just passed six feet. Not sure where he'll end up.

THanks for the heads up on the full moon. I'll be on the dock checking it out tomorrow night.

A 10 K with all of your boys. That would be awesome! You've posted it online now so that makes it official, I will be waiting to hear progress reports ;).

Midlife Jobhunter--Wow those are tall boys!! I have a theory that each son ends up being taller than the older one up. Maybe your youngest will be tallest.

Messy Mom--It would be awesome--I'd better start taking better care of myself. The youngest age to run it is 10 and the oldest registered was 88.

The Buck Moon! Never knew that. Neat!

My 12 year old son has stretched out so much this year! He will tower over me in no time.

Your 10K idea is great! Sam and I were so disappointed that we'd missed out on this in June: www.rachelcarsontrails.org/rct/challenge
I really hope we can make it next year.

Do I already know this - are you a Gator too? The sweatshirt middle boy is wearing makes me wonder if we've talked about this before.

Great idea - re: the molding! I'll do that for sure.

And doing a race with all of them sounds like a fun plan! Good luck!

Sara, we have started to see many other boys stretch out too. My son was smallest in about every one of his 7th grade classes last year. I told him I read that Kevin Costner was small even in college and ended up being 6'1" later. I still have a while before he passes me. Maybe age 15??

Christy, yes, I mentioned once on a post that I saw in one of your old posts that you have a photo of yourself in front of the very same "college" at U of F that I went to (a long time ago). The boy wearing the FL sweatshirt in the photo is my oldest and a sports fanatic.

my ten year old boy is nearly as big as me. We share shoes. I wear his clothes...he doesn't fit in mine...he is too big.
My baby.
Crazy.

Your ideas about preserving the "head" count are great. I used to mark Mr. M and whoever else felt like getting measured on the wall by the backdoor. But when we repainted . . . it was all gone. I've found an interior door now to use, but wish I'd been as clever as you were in saving the old markings.

And congrats on even aspiring to run a marathon!

My daughter is tall for her age. She's 8, and she's already 4-8. Now I'm tall too (5-9), but she's already declaring that she will be taller than me by the time she's 16. And, she says, that means she gets to be the boss of me at that point. I'm letting her believe that for a little while longer.

We measure her at Steve's aunt's house, and she'll never move. But the trim idea is brilliant.
