Two in Middle School is Not Too Fun

Hopefully I can add more to this blog post tonight. Because we are back in school now which means I am up early making everyone's lunches in shifts, cooking dinner every night while still in the work day's skirt and strappy sandals, up late cleaning the messes after reading to our 8 year old and checking the already hours of homework of all three of them, shopping for more school supplies, and not to mention the middle school paper work. This involves signing forms for 10 middle school teachers who want to make sure that I have read each of their class rules, their goals and expectations, their own supply lists and provided my email addresses so they can send me weekly Friday grade updates on now two boys in middle school.

I have one left in elementary school. People, enjoy the elementary school years. More updates later....

Oh, how I remember those days. Now that little one of mine will be a senior in high school. How quickly it goes.

Sheesh. You used to be able to outsource school, now you practically have to go to school with your kids then teach them again at home.

You know, I am going to take this to heart and enjoy the elementary school years. I believe you, 'cause that sounds like a total pain with all those forms!

And here I'm getting ready to complain about my 8 year-old not being a tiny girl anymore.

Midlife Jobhunter--Our 8th grader was just in 5th grade so I have painfully accepted that in a blink he'll be right up there.

Honeypiehorse--I can't believe this but in one sentence you have just summed up the experience I felt last year. Stay tuned for some stories that I was too shocked to put in black and white last year.

Becky--go ahead and complain about how they grow even though you ask them not too. I feel the same! My 8 yr old keeps getting bigger and smarter even though I threaten to put a brick on his head to stop it.

Our district is going to adopt a no homework policy...how cool is that...for sure at the elementary and limited at the middle school...other than reading for fun daily!

My husband is a middle school principal and I am pretty sure that his school does not have all that signing of sh%*!

Well I do hope that you get an opportunity to enjoy your boys' in middle school together.

Update: I am in trouble for not doing my homework. Last night my 6th grader said that his teacher wanted me to send her an email so that she will have my email address to easily put in her address book--this is after I filled it out on paper. I meant to do it today. So I did it tonight. And then found out another teacher is asking the same. I guess I should have sent a blanket email out.

Elucig--that is amazing about the no homework rule. My 3rd grader got 10 spelling words on his first day to write over and over. On his second day for homework he had to cut out letters from magazines and paste them down to make the words. Took a long, long time -- busy work for words he knew two years ago. I believe in our schools--hubs is a teacher in the same system as the boys, but in elementary. I've been thrilled with some of the middle school teachers and astounded at others. good reminder to enjoy them through it all.

Ahhhh yes. My boyfriend's daughter hits middle school last year. (FIFTH grade? When did it start happening so YOUNG?) It's already gotten complicated. She's cheering and playing basketball and wanting to do all the other things "all the other kids" are doing. It's getting quite pricey.

Ugh! I forgot about all the forms when they go back to school! Let alone the homework. And the email stuff, and 2 copies of the emergency contact form for each child (why can't they copy 1 instead of us handwriting each one, front and back? 3 kids=hand cramps! ha!) and the school handbooks...
A no homework policy? Wow. Dare to dream. I live in fear of forgetting to sign a piece of homework. I feel like it's *my* homework!
This is our first year for junior high/high school too! Orientation on Monday. Yikes!

I have these to do look forward to...and that school district with the no homework policy sounds great.

Wonder Woman! Girl, what I'd like to know is what you cook every night. Seriously! I have a five-meal repertoire and it is getting monotonous over here. Help!

I just want to know, is this parents-helping-with-homework thing a new phenomenon? Because I can tell you my parents never helped me with ANYTHING! We were totally on our own!

Thanks for the warning!

I seriously want to to homeschool. I am dreading everything you just wrote about...one week to go for me and I will be making lunches right next to you...
God help us...

School already?!! Otherwise, this sounds so familiar!

Rest assured, regarding craigslist. . . he's not allowed to be on this without an adult at his side, guiding. Yes, he's on there, but never without supervision and conversation (and careful steering and discussion about what else he might find).

School starts tomorrow for mine. Daughter heads to middle school (at the tender age of just-turned-11) to join her older brother who has one year of middle school under his belt. That just leaves Youngest, a boy going into 2nd. I've put my head in the sand and refused to even LOOK at the forms I picked up last week.
