Daily Desserts

I am powerless in a household of boys who love desserts—just anything sweet—they are not discerning most of the time. They are this way because of Hubs, I’m sure. He has to have something sweet to eat at night. It seems whenever we go out to eat, before we get home he mentions how he needs some dessert. I think that 98% of the time after eating out we don’t go home until we’ve walked through the grocery store for cookies or ice cream (see, it does not have to be special—just dessert).

Let’s back up to how we were each raised. When I was growing up there was not dessert every night of the week, nor was it served as part of the meal. If we were having a regular dinner or a special holiday meal, we would clear away the dishes and then leave the dining area and relax for a long time before venturing back to get dessert. Or—and this is a key detail—if there was a box of cookies it would last. Or if there was pudding my brother and I would know which ramekin was ours—it would remain in the fridge for a couple days till we ate our own.

On the other hand my Hubs is the youngest of 6 kids. Dessert was made and brought out EVERY night, immediately after dinner. And everyone would eat it then and there on top of dinner, because if you waited till later it would be gone. I have been a daughter-in-law for 22 years and this still amazes me. No sooner is the last bite of dinner swallowed and my mother-in-law brings out more dishes and silverware and three different varieties of dessert to the table. I am always asked what I want for dessert and I always reply, “I am too stuffed now but maybe later, thanks!” And I’ll chat of course and help clean of course but I just can’t enjoy dessert until I have digested dinner.

Have I mentioned I was really slim when I got married? There I’d go to the grocery store and buy a week’s worth of groceries including dessert stuff. And Hubs would proceed to dig into it, within an hour back from the store, completely clashing with my concept of making food last a week.

And eventually we had our three boys and like clones they are dessert lovers too, asking about it just about every night. Many times I say good-naturedly, “Wait—do we need to have a dessert EVERY night?” (and Hubs will say, "And the problem would be????") and we all laugh. It’s only when we eat dinner on the late side and there’s only time for showers and bedtime that no one is looking for dessert.

Except this past week, no one asked me about dessert. The Breyer's chocolare chip ice cream has been untouched in the freezer. And here is the trash can that is located next to just one boy's bed:
Halloween candy gives me a week off of keeping the cupboards stocked with dessert!

I understand both concepts- that dessert needn't be served every night and that every night is better with dessert.
Jello?
Just kidding.

Whoa! That's some serious candy consumption. But at least the wrappers are in the garbage can and not under the bed.

My husband was raised in a household that put CREAM on their cereal.

He still whines about skim milk.

But he doesn't have a sweet tooth--lucky me.

OMG! Do you live in my house? Except for the part about your husband being one of six kids. My husband only had a sister. But he and my kids seem to think dessert is a right. And when I try to make it a special thing, the husband ignores me and eats it in front of the kids destroying any credibility I might have had. I gave up. Sigh.

I was raised in a house like yours, but unfortunately I developed a sweet tooth all on my own!

That picture made me laugh!

:) My oldest's pumpkin was mysteriously missing this morning - I found it in her room, stuffed with lots of empty wrappers!

We never had dessert every night, maybe just a cookie. My kids have gotten in the habit of thinking they need it after every MEAL. Need to break that. Soon!

I've always wondered how much candy boys can eat. Wow.

My child is an ice cream fiend. Couldn't care less about all his Halloween candy. But if he doesn't get his ice cream sandwich after dinner he pitches a fit. I worried about this for a while, but always seem to give in - he's as skinny as a rail. And he comes by it honestly - my Daddy was an obsessive ice cream man too.

BTW - Did Becky get you shredding? I just bought that damned DVD and it's kicking my butt!

I am the same way as you with dessert. I lived in a household where dessert was maybe once a week if that, or if guests were over. Otherwise, dessert could have been a pickle spear. (We Jews love our pickles. I actually gagged my way through broccoli just to get my pickle.) I don't like to eat dessert on top of the meal and only give Sprite dessert when 1. she's been good all day 2. it's not too late AND 3. she MUST eat enough of her dinner to satisfy my fears that she's not eating enough.
John's family breaks out the dessert right after the last bite is eaten and whenever I partake, heartburn is immediately following.

I don't have a huge sweet tooth, but that last pic left me wanting Reese's Peanut Butter Cup...yum. They are hard to come by in these parts!

Our bunch goes in spurts. Ice cream spurts, pie spurts, pudding, cookies. And then we'll all get burnt out on it until the next time.
My extended family is pretty good about having umpteen desserts right after dinner. It is a given that you are totally not hungry by then, but the peer pressure is strong to 'man up' and eat your dessert.
Ah, tradition!

I'm soooooo like your husband and boys. I love dessert. That being said, a box of cookies can last in my home for quite some time as I'm at least able to control myself somewhat

My house was like yours as a kid - dessert was a rarity that came with a holiday usually attached.

And I adore that you worked in "ramekin." Nothing better than looking in the fridge and discovering your individual helping of chocolate pudding unmolested.

How funny! Our lives are so similar like this. I never knew anyone that ate dessert as part of the meal until my inlaws!

David and I both seem to need at least a cookie, though a chocolate chip or cup of hot chocolate will suffice for me. I save the major dessert consumption to special occasions and eating out, and have a 'reputation' for being the one who eats all that extra too sweet icing that everyone scrapes off their cakes at birthdays! I'm lucky right now with the grandsons that they think a popsickle is a special treat that they get if they eat all their dinner, because I can't have special desserts here when they are because of the nagging for it. As for Halloween candy, we used to hide it and dole it out slowly, but now just set it all out and say 'go for it' until it's gone, thus ending all the nagging and also gets it gone faster.
