Full Flower Moon Tonight!

Last year the full moon was earlier in the month of May and I wrote about the flowers in our yard and how my husband sneaks new plants into the ground the way some women sneak new shoes into their closet. The same thing has been going on all month this year.

We have gorgeous dahlias in old stone pots by the front door. There are even more roses than ever, which by the way, love being next to a stone or brick wall. He thinks we needed some blue so I don’t know the names of half the flora that have a new home here.

So there are flowers everywhere just as the Native Americans named this month’s full moon the Full Flower Moon. I walk around the yard to enjoy the sights and smells…for about 10 minutes a day. It has been a crazy past two weeks with work getting busy and sports wrapping up and school about done and me having to step up again and singlehandedly implement Youngest’s school party. But for 10 minutes at night I admire the blooms and point and ask, “Is that new?” and also I have vegetables and herbs to check out daily.

And I took pictures. I wanted to show you the bouquet I made of gardenias that I now have in a ceramic wine glass in our bedroom. Heavenly. Don’t they smell like the tropics? Like memories of south Florida? Like wearing a sundress, sunburned, with a twenty-year old body, while out on a date with someone who admires my Jungle Gardenia perfume ……

I’m back. Anyway, the computer is too slow and needs to be replaced so downloading photos didn’t work out for me this morning. So here is a gardenia bloom from Google images. BTW, I attached a gardenia to a pearl choker necklace I wore on my wedding day. It got pretty wilted.

In about a week I will be on vacation – have I mentioned it will be my first vacation day since 1/1/10? Having some good reading material is numero uno. Don’t you make sure you pack the books before the clothes? I really don’t care that my tankini is from last year and my beach towels are about 5 years old and my favorite khaki skirt from Eddie Bauer is a year old and ditto on the after-beach dresses. I have to have books I have coveted for months in my lap on the beach. Plus, for road trips to Florida I also check out about 15 magazines from the library—something for everyone—and we read while Hubs’ drives. Actually the Oldest listens to his I-Pod but my Middle son is a chip off the old block. Youngest sleeps and watches dvds.

Here are the two books I will be taking.

I couldn’t believe they both had pretty purple in the front (oh yeah, I did get a new purple top). Plus, I can’t believe both authors worked in NY for years and now live with their families here in Atlanta. So many bloggers have written about The Help that I can’t wait to get started. And I am so happy that I paid my dues in the early years teaching the boys to swim (well, OK, it was mostly Hubs)—no water wings for us, and no rest in a lounge chair but boy did it pay off. They will stay in the ocean playing for hours while…I…..can….read my two books that are as pretty as a purple flower. And wave them in for more sunscreen.

Where are you going in Florida? The gardenias are blooming like crazy here, by the way.
Watch out for the red ants and enjoy your books.

I wait all year for those gardenias! One bush got transplanted and is not happy though.
We are going to be staying with family from Daytona and southward.... Not the panhandle :(
As Oldest puts it--we will be freeloading off the relatives.

We must be traveling on the same moon beam! I'm headed for the beach soon with as many books as I can carry. You will LOVE "The Help."

And I love you for tipping me off that Emily G. has a new book out! I had no clue. Must get before I head out. Also, my sister just lent me a book called "Nantucket Nights" by Elin Hilderbrand. She's not a heaving bosom fan, and she raved about it. So it must be good.

P.S. You'd probably LOVE anything by Jonathon Tropper ("How to Talk to a Widower," et al.) He's fantastic.

You have a sister? Why am I just hearing about this?
Emily G. is speaking in your town on Tues. She spoke here last Friday but I missed it. She has a list of fave books on her website and so I checked out a couple from the library.
Just drove back from taking the kids to the skatepark and told them you saw a fullish moon thew other night. It is spectacular here tonight--we admired it thru the moon roof.

Jungle Gardenia! Oh my God, I hadn't thought of that in years. I loved Jungle Gardenia. Heady stuff. Hmmm.

I haven't read The Help yet, but I've had about 20 people tell me I'll love it. Have a fun time!

I'm late to the party as usual--never heard of either of those books! Will have to look for them.

Your holiday sounds like heaven! Especially the lying on the beach and reading part...I'm looking forward to those days!

Have a great time. :)

I know you're more than ready for this vacation after being so active! Don't forget the sunscreen!

I've lost three gardenia bushes over the last few years, just can't seem to plant them in the right spot, I guess. So I trespass on other yards just to smell them, and they are in full bloom right now.

I love vacation and I love to read! Enjoy!

I have had The Help since Christmas and am holding off reading it so I can read it with my book club in August. I can't wait.

I have been plowing through some really good books. I have them listed on the right side of my blog, if you are interested.

Oh I love Emily Giffen! My neighbor introduced me to her books :) Enjoy your vacation! You are so right about teaching them all to swim young. I have a ways to go before we get there, but look forward to the day when I too can relax and read on vacation :)

Have to say, whenever I see the moon, I think of you now :) We camped out Sunday night and by 2am it was so big and bright in the sky over the tent, and I knew that it was the waning full flower moon - thank you for that!

I LOVED "the Help". Also, the smell of roses is what keeps me going sometimes. I adore flowers.

I think you guys are already on your merry way - sorry I'm late to the bon voyage party!! Have a super, duper time. And you're better off not being up on the panhandle. Trust me.

Sob.

I'm totally laughing that Lawyer Mom rec. Elin H. - I just finished one of her books that I happened to randomly pick up because I liked the cover (yeah, I do that) - "Barefeet" - it was a great read.

Need to get "Nantucket Nights."

Be safe!

P.S. Gardenias are some of my favorite. Lucky girl to have those on your nightstand.

My husband sneaks new tools into the house. I have to admit, he's pretty handy to have around. And as a hobby, tools are cheap compared to some of his friends (motorcycles, scotch...).
