Saturday’s Super Size Full Moon at Sunset

And here I thought I was going to write about this month's full moon being the Full Worm Moon.  Well, that is what those originally in North America named this moon, knowing it's when the Earth begins to thaw out and get ready for spring (and last year in March I checked it out and there ARE bunches of earthworms under there!).

But I was doing my pre-full moon Googling and found out that this Saturday the full moon will be a Supermoon--the biggest in almost 20 years.  It turns out that full moons vary in size to us because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. It is an ellipse with one side (perigee) which is closer to Earth than the other (apogee).  This Saturday's full perigee moon will look 12-14% bigger and 30% brighter than moons that we see on the apogee side of the Moon's orbit.

And, the full Moon on March 19th (technically around 7:00 p.m.) occurs less than one hour away from perigee--and that happens only 18 years or so.

I'm looking forward to this special weekend.  I'll definitely check out this last full moon of the winter.  It will be fullest at sunset on Saturday.  And then Sunday at sunset…..spring will officially begin.  So glad these events are taking place at sunset because as far as the mornings go, I have been announcing all week that I am going to sleep in big time on Saturday and Sunday.

Getting my porch chairs ready. We're having friends over for dinner. Hmmm, maybe a table outside. Need to do it before the mosquitoes show up. Down with Texas and its lack of screened porches!!

You're so smart :)

I've been so bummed the last couple of days, knowing that it was just going to be chucking it down, rain-wise, and we'd totally miss seeing this.

And that's what happened.

It was beautiful and bright! Just wish it wasn't snowing today now that it is spring.

Wasn't it incredible? And it still is!

I went out searching for this moon. Honestly, couldn't see through the darn trees and buildings. I am sure it was beautiful, and I liked knowing that it was there.

I figured you'd be watching for this. I saw it after it had risen quite a bit.
