If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em

Last year I made plans to have lunch and see a movie with a friend for our “Super Bowl Sunday”. Then I viewed all the commercials on the internet. This year I stayed home and made us a food feast in front of the TV. About 15 minutes into the game my oldest son laughs and says, “Look at Mom—she is reading a magazine during the game and then watches the TV during the commercials!” (he notices everything all the time). Reading People magazine came in handy though because otherwise I would not have known about The Office airing after the Super Bowl.

I was waiting for some really good commercials but I guess companies have curtailed the ad budget too. I did, however, notice the violence theme: Doritos had a bus slam into a man in one ad and in another had a man throw a snow globe at another man’s private parts….Bud Light showed a man thrown out of a four-story window—and that was just during the first quarter. But it’s not like our TV has never broadcast “World’s Most Amazing Police Videos” or “When Animals Attack” (which will one day be a post).

In the third quarter my husband felt kind of achy and had retired for the night. Then the kids went to their rooms. So there I was watching alone. And not reading a magazine. And to think when the boys were born I told my friends I could not see myself as a soccer/baseball/football/hockey mom. The two oldest boys did come join me after they heard my loud exclamations in the 4th quarter. And they only had to explain a few things to me.

Violence has just snuck its way into our lives, hasn't it? I hadn't even thought of the commercials like that. Excellent point.

Ha! I was reading a book during the Super Bowl! I was seriously underwhelmed by the commercial. Either the folks on Madison Ave. are getting dumber or nobody had any money to do anything cute.

I watched it too, though kind of against my will. Actually, my mom and I left for part of it and went shopping.

All I remember from the past is that the thing to watch during the Superbowl were the commercials. I remember some darn good ones, too, like the spoof of 1984 with Big Brother watching and some young woman running into the room where everyone was droning on and on...anyway, this year's commercials sucked. And we were taught, even 30 years ago, that there was violence in our cartoons! Just imagine! What are "they" trying to do to us? I'm not one for censorship, but I'm sure we can think of something to put in our commercials other than what we see every day on the local "get me my anti-anxiety medication please" evening news!
