I survived another flight last week. I never posted about a traumatic flight I had in December— it really slayed me. Coming back from FL visiting my 88 year-old grandmother, the plane got hit by lightning and I quietly cried and the lady next to me tried to comfort me but she was praying to Jesus. The pilot or flight attendant never said anything. A man behind me yelled, “OMG the plane was just hit by lightning” after a huge boom and a flash of white light right outside my window. I knew that my trip in March for work was coming up and in February when I made my reservation online I was hot flashing and out of breath.
Here’s what helped with this trip last week. Besides flying in very nice weather, after waiting an extra 90 minutes for a delayed flight, I happened to be standing in the tall window right next to the pilots who were going to pilot the plane. They were nice, they provided the "human" reminder of who is up front, and one was really cute. Then, on the plane, I happened to sit next to a lady about my age and I think she was nervous too and we talked. That makes a huge difference for me: someone friendly to talk to during take off and landing times. And the nice Southern gentleman pilot (the more mature one) stood by the cockpit and thanked everyone for the business and I thanked him for a good flight. The flight back went well too. I feel perhaps I am moving forward with the plane anxiety.
Besides this plane trip in which I spent way too much time sitting in two airports, I also spent an extra 10 hours in my car for some day trips, which has done havoc to my neck. So yesterday I visited the chiropractor who is a no frills type (just visit when you want to, adjusts my neck and spine and I’m good to go).
But then last night I went to my youngest son’s baseball practice and I sat there for 90 minutes overestimating how the weather has turned balmy—I was not dressed warm enough. So I was all tense and I should have walked but it was dark out so I just sat there cracking and spitting (sort of) sunflower seeds. My middle son hung out skateboarding, as there is a skate bowl nearby. I teased him that I was going to join him on my rollerblades and he said, “Oh, the skateboarders don’t really like it when rollerbladers go in the skatebowl. Especially a middle aged woman.” Ouch.
Later that night I hung upside down on our new inversion bench. I surprised my husband last month for his birthday and had it delivered fro
m Amazon. He put it together the same day and after rolling my eyes about his desire for an inversion bench for the past few years, I have to admit I really like it. It looks like some sort of fitness equipment but you clamp your ankles down (must wear shoes) and then lean back slowly and you can control via your arms how much of an angle you want to lean back. The Hubs goes completely upside down for several minutes but I am working up to that point. The pull of the spine feels great. Afterwards I felt like I had done some good yoga without the Cat and Cow poses.

Ah, the spring sports season. I relate. Hopefully your flying time will only become a bore - or a chance to catch your breath. As to the inversion? I feel like I'm standing on my head a lot. Does that count?
I agree, I always feel better flying when I have someone to talk to.
That inversion bench sounds like it would really make your back feel better.
I look forward to following your blog.
Yikes! That flying experience sounds terrifying! Bless your heart. Glad the next one was better.
LOL about your son. He'll get his own one day! ;) I am impressed you would do rollerblades at all! I am so uncoordinated I would need a chiropractor after trying them, I'm sure!
My tip for flying? Xanax. It really does help. It also helps with those "especially middle aged women" comments!
I fly around a lot these days and to tell you the truth I'm pretty tired of it. I've yet to have a too scary flight though I was chatting online with The Stiletto Mom while she was on a very scary flight. It must have been really bad because she flies a lot and she was scared. I would have soiled myself.
My hubs has always talked about an inversion bench - I think it would give me a headache! :) Do you watch all the practices or bring something along to entertain yourself? I have a feeling that in a few years (when the little 2 are bigger) I will get really good at knitting, with all the waiting I'll be doing...
I don't envy you all those sports, though I know that as a mother it's part of the joy and duty.
We've had an inversion table for ten years, and it is great...except that I can't use it. I have a hiatal hernia, and even 30 seconds upside down will send a gallon of acid into my chest, hurting like a heart attack. Not worth it! I'll stick to the chiropractor!
We had a similar experience on a plane trip from Georgia to Denver, and ended up having to layover somewhere in Kansas because of the bad weather. We had our daughter with us, and I think we held each other extra close that night.
I am so wanting an inversion bench, they are wonderful!
My back hurts just reading about your long trips in the car and plane. I don't mind flights if they are smooth, lightening, Oy Vey!
Scary, I always hate flying although it's statistically very safe.
I was on a flight once in a very small plane and my seat was right across from the jumpseat where the flight attendant sat. We got into some horrible weather and that little plane was just bouncing all over the sky and I swear to you- the flight attendant had a book open in her lap but I could see that she also had a rosary in her fingers and was actually praying, not reading.
Not a good sign.
I added a photo of the inversion bench in action. It feels best to be horizontal and then gradually work up to the total upside down.
MJ: I'll never forget your comment once about sitting in a field so you could watch 2 or 3 boys' baseball games at once!
Margaret: So glad you stopped by!
Amy: Was surprised by middle son's comment--he is usually the most sensitive and flattering to me. Hormones I guess (both of ours).
Under the Inf: So many people have said this. I'm too worried about having to then find the rental car place, drive a rental car to an interstate, find hotel room, etc. Would I be too loopy?
Michele: I used to fly a lot 5 yrs ago. Plane accidents last year in the news really put me over the edge.
Jen: You should get one for your Hubs--I can tell you which one I researched was really good for the $$. With all the rain in Feb there are only about 8 practices and then the games start. Hubs is asst. coach on older son's league so I find myself walking back and forth on fields to watch if they play at same time.
Wander--No inversion bench time for you. Ouch!
Martha: I am addicted. The bench feels just like yoga stretches--i add the deep breathing.
Our feet: I will never like it and wish I could stop picturing disaster when I'm on one.
YIKES! I am scared to death to fly, too! I had to try not to think about it last fall when we all went to Disney.
I always thought an inversion table would feel soooo good but I just want to try one out to see if it feels as good as I think it would feel. Does it fold up so you can store it somewhere or is it just in the living room so you can watch TV while upside down?
Ms. Moon: That is incredibly horrific. I would have wanted to knock my head on a wall to knock myself out if on that flight.
Surrounded: I didn’t know y’all went to Disney! Hubs set it up in the living room and then carried it downstairs to our basement, which is a complete in-law suite and it is in the bedroom there, as is, with no folding up. Y’all need to come visit (I don’t say y’all in real life) and try it.
I've got a big credit on amazon -- all those coins in the coinstar machine -- and I'm going to take a quick look at an inversion doo-hickey. Sounds fabulous.
So glad you handled the flight well. Good for you for seeing all the good things about the flight. That positive outlook had to help.
The bench sounds pretty fun. I loved rolling back on the big exercise ball before the girls somehow punctured it :(
I will never tell my husband about lightning striking that airplane. He'll never take me anywhere! Not that we've gone anywhere, but just in case!
I've done the middle of the field triple soccer game watching! I usually missed all the good stuff, of course.
Believe it or not, I have been on a plane that was struck by lightening before! It really is scary, no wonder you were nervous!
I've always wanted to try one of those inversion things :)
How did I miss this? That bench is crazy! You should have an inversion party, or something. I do remember a long-ago yoga teacher of mine saying that everyone should spend some time upside down every day. Hmm.
Good job on working on your plane anxiety!
Hit by lightning!! Now that is a horrific flight experience. I would have totally peed myself.
