My Check Writing Days Are Over

Well, here is a full moon story for today. Every couple of weeks or so, sometimes more and sometimes less often I look at our checking account online. Early today I looked because my husband called me and was asking if I had sent a check out for something (of course I am the family bill payer, aren’t you?)

While we were on the phone together I perused our checking account online. There are very few checks that I write as opposed to paying online, but there are times when I write a check for a school field trip, or when the bug guy comes to visit or when I get my haircut, etc. Or yeah, also the electricity bill and the gas (cooking and heat). Oh yeah also for some reason the cable bill was paid via check last month.

But what was this? I saw that a check cleared the other day in the amount of $986 plus change. WTH? So I clicked on the button to see a copy of the actual check and WTF???? There was MY signature and the check was made out to SOME UNKNOWN CHICK and her name and the dollar amount was NOT in my handwriting. I could barely talk as I said, “HUBS! Someone wrote a check that went through our account for $986!!! I have to call our bank now!!! Bye!!!!”

And then I quickly looked through the listing to see if anything else looked strange and poor stranded Hubs is calling me again one minute later to see what I found out before I even had a chance to find the phone number to the bank and I practically hung up on him again.

So I called the bank and got transferred to the fraud department. The fraud rep and I looked at another check that was legit and clearly saw differences with the type font of those typical items printed on the check. It was extremely creepy because someone had bogus checks printed (luckily it was one check but hmmpphh she knew to make it out for enough money but not a crazy higher amount or else it would have bounced, people, but $986 is friggin crazy high enough).

You know on your checks how it states “Pay to the order of” before you write in the name? That font was different, and other details like that. And her “Nine hundred eighty-six” writing was MUCH neater than my writing. So this chick went to my hugely popular nationwide bank with this bogus check and showed ID and endorsed the back and pulled cash out of our account. (BTW the bank allows a non-customer to cash up to $5,000).

Anyway, the fraud rep advised that the money will be put back into my account but it will take 3-5 days and that oh yeah, we will need to close out the account and open a new one. He then asked if I had any idea how this happened, and he asked me several times if I knew this person. I told the rep “No, but while I was on hold I Googled her and I see that she graduated from an alternative high school in Atlanta in 2005 called_____. (Readers, by alternative I mean it is for those who’ve been disciplined too often to be in regular public school). And that I see her under the White Pages with an Atlanta address of _____________.” She has a one-of-a-kind name so that was easy. He also asked if my purse or checks had been stolen and I said no. My guess is that someone who is employed by perhaps the power company, or the cable company, for example, photocopied it and spent time printing a check with the proper account number and routing number.

So Hubs and I had to take time to go to the bank, close the account, and now change up all those things like direct deposit, and account numbers for everything else we do. And this weekend I have to spend time redoing the accounts that I do have set up for online bill paying and change them, AND set up additional online payments. Cuz it is the 1st on Sunday.

It is funny how many people older than me (i.e. my mother, MIL, grandmother) think that anyone can get to your “stuff” online but here is proof that old fashioned checks can get into the wrong hands too. At least I am a “crossover” person with one foot moving along the electronic highway but one still Old School—I do get online and check things out—I feel horrible for older people who can be such fraud victims.

Oh well, it could be worse. Two nights ago we went to bed with our garage door wide open. Oooops! Nothing happened of course but it is a wake up call.

Hope the full moon shines bright on you tonight and be careful with your checks if you mail any out like I do/did!

Yep. I'm the bill payer in the family. Mostly because Hubby had a tendency to, um, forget.

I love getting my credit card bill, on which there are always charges I don't recognize. I end up googling them all and eventually figure out that, yes, that was me.

But every once in a while, there's fraud. Guitar strings to Bangledesh, a sex service in Liverpool, an online gambling site in Sri Lanka.

I have turned over more credit card numbers than anyone previously in history.

Oh my God. What a pain in the butt! I seldom write checks anymore either, mostly just to Jude's school. And the yard man. It's a good thing you go through your statement.

All that fraud stuff scares the crap out of me. I used to be an HR Manager for a finance company and I saw the long term effects and the difficulty of getting stolen accounts, stolen IDs, etc. corrected. I think it might actually be a little easier now since it is much more common than 10-15 years ago.

I am like you - a little check paying, a little online paying. I do look at our account almost every day.

Okay whoa! That is scary! I never thought about somebody going to the trouble to just make a fake check! And why that amount, I wonder? Is it not something most people would notice?

I just saw the huge gorgeous moon and thought of you.

My gosh, what a pain in the butt to have to change the banking info on all those accounts that you pay online! And you're right, it could have been so much worse - even $50 would have overdrawn us, and the overdraft fee is $30! More and more places are telling you to do a credit with your debit card because of that kind of fraud, putting that thingie in the slot to get your pin number or whatever the scam is.

I'm one of those 'older' people, but like you I have one foot on both sides, a little check writing and mostly online bill paying.

Hope things get straightened out. Will you be involved at all in the prosecution of this person, or will the bank be taking care of it?

TM: I bet you have some interesting conversations with your brood of men each month after you peruse the statement! I usually see magazines I didn't order.
Gretchen and Under: I usually look at it more often--it had been two weeks. We contacted the credit bureaus to report what happened in case anyone tries to open up a new card or something. What is creepy is her/them having our names and address. Actually printing it on the top usual part of the check. Yuck.
Becky: Strange amount indeed. I bet she called tha bank to act like a merchant first and ask if a purchase in the amt of $986 plus change would clear. I bet a random # like that looks more like it was payment for a service. Last night I dragged the family outside in blankets to look at the moon.
Elucig: I'm going to have to set up a whole new process for myself now.
Wander: The bank was pretty nice and would have taken care of overdraft fees, but what a hassle. It was embarrasing enough that night I used my check card at the Zaxby's for my kids and it was declined cuz the bank cancelled my acct. I did call the police and asked about reporting it and they stated since the bank is giving me the $$ back it is up to the bank to report it and pursue it. I'll keep you posted if I hear anything. I am sure I can get her phone number and I have her address but let's just say it is in an area where my curiosity is not worth bodily harm. I'd love to call and cuss her out....but she/they have my address.....

What a pain! I'm so glad you caught it, but how annoying to have to close that account and re-do all your bill paying stuff.

I, too, thought of you when I saw the moon last night. It was so beautiful!

That is craziness! You have to wonder if she really thought she was going to get away with it? Sure it worked temporarily, but still.

I'm not even sure I'd know where to begin with setting everything up all over again. I have so many auto payments coming from so many places. Like 5 checking accounts to keep track of...I guess that's why I spend an embarrassing amount of money on identity protection and credit monitoring every month.

btw, Ya'll might want to check with your homeowners insurance to see if they offer coverage for identity theft/recovery. It's usually very inexpensive. Friendly advice from your friendly local insurance nerd. :)

I do online billpay and still write a handful of checks, but I watch our account. Closely. What a scumbag to do this to you all.

Oh my. You always have the craziest stories!! I mean between this and the Coke bottle field trip fiasco, your life is an insane adventure!!!

Glad it's working out. It freaks me out to hear stuff like this because I never worry stuff like this is gonna happen....

And all of a sudden I'm hoping I'm getting my stories straight and that the Coke bottle story is you.

I don't know how you're not signing her up to receive a bunch of free garbage. You know, like the old albums you used to be able to order by Ronco or someone or other.

Dang, that just bites!

What a story! I had to go through all that jazz a while back when my purse was stolen. One of my cards was used at a Safeway and at a Red Lobster. Apparently, the crook and his friends were hungry...hope everything gets straightened out with you soon!

Whew. Glad you caught her early on in the game. This tells me I need to check my account more often online.
